More about Cowboy Junkies

Sometimes revolutions begin quietly. In 1988, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies.

With Cowboy Junkies’ new album, All That Reckoning, the band once again gently shakes the listener to wake up. Whether commenting on the fragile state of the world or on personal relationships, this new collection of songs encourages the listener to take notice. It also may be the most powerful album Cowboy Junkies have yet recorded.

Anyone who has been following Cowboy Junkies’ three decade-long journey knows the band has always traveled on its own path. From the auspicious debut of Whites Off Earth Now and the subsequent international breakthrough with The Trinity Session, to the group’s Nomad Series of themed albums (2010-2012), Cowboy Junkies have never let music business trends dictate where the band was headed.

Formed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar, Margo Timmins on vocals, Peter Timmins on drums, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass, the band has sparkled over the course of 25 albums.

Unlike most long-lasting groups, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table,” says Michael. “Even if the world doesn’t know it, we do.”

Cowboy Junkies are not following anyone else’s guidebook. It’s advice Margo gave to her 15-year-old son, who is an aspiring musician in his own band. “He asked me, ‘How do you come up with the next ‘latest thing’? I told him, ‘Don’t try. It’s your music. … Just love what you’re doing and do it your own way.”

Vancouver, BC, Jan 17, 2018 — Paul Mercs Concerts is pleased to announce this exciting concert date of the legendary French electronic music pioneer, Jean-Michel Jarre.

Jarre is a four-time Guinness World Record holder for largest concerts ever performed, a 2017 Grammy nominee with more than eighty million albums sold and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador renowned for his one-off ground breaking events at historical landmarks across the world. He’s one of the first artists in the world to perform electronic music as we know it today.

A Laser Harp…keytar…synths upon synths…the Queen Elizabeth Theatre will be lit up like never before when prolific and celebrated electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre comes to Vancouver where he’ll be showcasing music from his two-part LP Electronica and most recent release Oxygene 3, alongside classic material from milestone albums such as Oxygene and Equinoxe.

In 2017, Jarre brought his ‘Electronica’ world tour to North America for a nine-date outing, marking the first time the Grammy-nominated artist and French electronic music composer & producer ever toured this side of the Atlantic Ocean in his almost 50-year career.

Jean-Michel Jarre personally designed his impressive stage show featuring state of the art production, perception-defying mobile LED panels and immaculate laser lights which he brought to North America as part of his ‘Electronica’ World Tour last year to rave reviews, with Dancing Astronaut’s Matt Sia stating, “Jarre’s live show is something that seems out of the distant future, and is an essential experience for any fan of electronic music’s capacity to innovate” (5/11/17).

Liisa Ladourceur from Now Toronto added, “Jean-Michel Jarre’s first Canadian show was the stuff of digital dreams” (5/10/17). See below for more critical feedback.

View a video here of Jarre performing his signature Laser Harp to “The Time Machine”, the title track of his Grammy-nominated album (“Best Dance/Electronic Album”), Electronica 1: The Time Machine on YouTube.

Listen to Jean-Michel Jarre discuss the Electronica project with NPR’s “All Things Considered”.

Here’s what critics said about Jean-Michel Jarre’s 2017 North American ‘Electronica’ World Tour dates:

“At Radio City Music Hall (in New York), Jarre’s show was sonically and visually stunning.”
Jeff Perlah, Newsweek, 5/24/17

“An immersive performance, featuring cutting-edge digital technology…something that seems out of the distant future, and is an essential experience for any fan of electronic music’s capacity to innovate.”
Matt Sia, Dancing Astronaut, 5/11/17

“A step through time…Jarre mesmerized an enthusiastic crowd with a timeless show.”
Michael Mollura, Music Connection, 6/1/17

“One of the most sophisticated multimedia shows ever imagined.”
L. Paul Mann, Glide Magazine, 6/5/17

“Shows like this happen only once in a lifetime.”
Kristof G., Voir (Montreal), 5/12/17

“A visual and sonic triumph – true magic is born. There’s a possibility I may never experience a performance of that caliber again.”
Kori Hazel, 303 Magazine (Denver), 5/26/17

“Spectacular to witness… The show was nothing short of mesmerizing.”

Deva Premal & Miten have traveled the world for 20 years, sharing the healing power of mantras. The unique blend of Deva’s voice, the ancient Sanskrit chants, Miten’s soulful songs and Manose’s sacred flute offers audiences an evening of peace and transformation.

Miten: “Mantras are such a powerful force. We’ve seen so many people — us included — become spiritually rejuvenated as a result of chanting them. Personally, the dusty cobwebs and darker corners of my life have been washed clean by the mantras.” Deva Premal & Miten’s concerts are known for their transformational and healing effect. Their voices, their music and not least the communal chanting inspire a meeting of body, mind and spirit.”

Deva: “For me, the greatest gift of chanting is that it brings a deep relaxation into my busy mind. In Sanskrit, ‘man’ means mind and ‘tra’ means to be free from, so ‘mantra’ is literally a way to free the mind. This has been the essence of my journey with meditation.”

Nepalese bansuri maestro, Manose – acknowledged as among the world’s best – accompanies as always Deva Premal & Miten both on flute, vocals and various instruments, including ukulele.

The SOUL OF MANTRA – LIVE tour is augmented by Canadian Joby Baker on bass, vocals and keyboards and Danish percussionist, Rishi. Together, this unique ensemble serves as a musical bridge to experiencing the Soul of Mantra. Deva: “This planet is definitely shaking and trembling right now. It is an amazing moment to be alive because it is becoming very clear that we cannot expect peace to be delivered from outside – we have to find it within. For me, the mantras are a gateway to inner peace and to a deeper acceptance – and my joy is to share them.”

With a large, faithful and constantly expanding audience – from New York to Moscow, from Paris and London to Buenos Aires and L.A, Deva Premal & Miten show us, year after year, that in the spirit of music and mantra, humanity is able to unite.

Deva Premal & Miten with Manose’s 2018 Soul of Mantra – Live tour is sponsored by ORGANIC INDIA in association with UPLIFT.

About Adam Savage:

One of the most highly regarded and watched series on Discovery Channel, “MythBusters” ran for 14 earth-shattering years. Co-executive produced and Co-hosted by Savage, the show mixed scientific method with problem solving gleeful curiosity and plain old-fashioned ingenuity to confirm or bust myths, popular misconceptions and creating its own signature style of explosive experimentation. Today, in addition to creating content for his website Tested.com, Adam has become a proponent for making, working with the White House to encourage kids and adults alike to get their hands dirty. He’s also a regular at conventions across the country, where his elaborate and handmade costumes (such as Totoro at New York Comic Con) attract much attention … and hugs.

2CELLOS, music’s most electric and dynamic instrumental duo, go to the movies for their new album Score. Bringing 2CELLOS’ game-changing sound and style to the most popular melodies ever written for classic and contemporary movies and television…. and they now take that sound on tour.

An international sensation, 2Cellos unique 2014 video version of “Thunderstruck” is currently rocking YouTube with over 90 million views and their other more recent videos following closely behind. Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser have created three high-energy albums for Sony Music Masterworks. Score finds them exploring a more traditional sound-world. “The album represents some of our favorite pieces of music by our favorite film composers. Having the opportunity to arrange them for cello whilst working with the world class London Symphony Orchestra has been a dream come true,” says Stjepan. The album opens with an arrangement of Ramin Djawadi’s melodies that score Game of Thrones, culminating in the bold Main Title theme, in which the stirring sound of cellos announces each of what may be the most eagerly awaited episodes in contemporary television.

The vocal beauty of the cello’s sound is a perfect match for a brace of romantic themes. They include the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer song “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s; Ennio Morricone’s beautiful themes for Cinema Paradiso and Malena; Nino Rota’s love theme for The Godfather; Francis Lai’s Oscar-winning theme from Love Story; Hans Zimmer’s theme from Rain Man; and Stanley Myers’ haunting “Cavatina” heard in The Deer Hunter.

2CELLOS have forged a signature style that breaks down the boundaries between genres of music, from classical and film music to pop and rock. As impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out, Sulic and Hauser know no limits when it comes to performing live. They have sold out shows around the globe and also performed with Sir Elton John as part of his band, as well as opening his shows to rapturous acclaim.

“…Go and see them live, because it really is astonishing! I can’t remember seeing anything as exciting as them since I saw Jimi Hendrix live back in the 60’s…”
– Elton John

SEVEN THINGS I’VE LEARNED:

AN EVENING WITH IRA GLASS

Host of “This American Life”

Vancouver, BC, September 25, 2017 — Paul Mercs Concerts is pleased to present the following one-night engagement with Ira Glass, creator & host of the public radio show This American Life:
September 22, 2018
Vancouver, BC
Queen Elizabeth Theatre
Ira Glass is the creator, producer & host of This American Life, the iconic weekly public radio program with millions of listeners around the world. Using audio clips, music, and video, Ira Glass delivers a unique talk; sharing lessons from his life and career in storytelling: What inspires him to create? What drives his passion? How have failures and successes informed his decisions? During his presentation, Ira Glass will mix stories live onstage and help his audience better follow the creative process of one of our foremost storytellers. “It’s hard to make something that’s interesting. It’s really, really hard. It’s like a law of nature, a law of aerodynamics, that anything that’s written or anything that’s created wants to be mediocre. The natural state of all writing is mediocrity… So what it takes to make anything more than mediocre is such an act of will…” ― Ira Glass “We live in a world where joy and empathy and pleasure are all around us, there for the noticing.” ― Ira Glass “You will be fierce. You will fearless. And you will make work you know in your heart is not as good as you want it to be.” ― Ira Glass This American Life premiered on Chicago’s public radio station WBEZ in 1995 and is now heard on more than 500 public radio stations each week by over 2.2 million listeners with another 2.5 million downloading each podcast.  For years, it was the most popular podcast on iTunes, until the staff created the program Serial, which has over 10 million people downloading each episode Most weeks, the podcast of the program is the most popular podcast in America. The show also airs each week on the CBC in Canada and on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s radio network . Glass began his career as an intern at National Public Radio’s network headquarters in Washington, DC in 1978, when he was 19 years old. Over the years, he worked on nearly every NPR network news program and held virtually every production job in NPR’s Washington headquarters. He has been a tape cutter, newscast writer, desk assistant, editor, and producer. He has filled in as host of Talk of the Nation and Weekend All Things Considered. Under Glass’s editorial direction, This American Life has won the highest honors for broadcasting and journalistic excellence, including several Peabody and DuPont-Columbia awards. The American Journalism Review declared that the show is “at the vanguard of a journalistic revolution.”     TICKETING INFORMATION: Tickets available at www.ticketmaster.ca, 1-855-985-5000, or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets.   Media Contact: Elaine Easton | 604-683-8762 | elaine@paulmercsconcerts.com   About Paul Mercs Concerts: Paul Mercs Concerts has 40 years of in-depth industry experience in various aspects of the entertainment business: artist management, large-scale event production, and concert promotion.
